SHA: Government shuts 1,400 private hospitals over fraud

- The government has shut down 1,400 private hospitals over fraudulent practices linked to the Social Health Authority (SHA), Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has revealed.

Speaking during the launch of the Measles-Rubella and Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine Campaign at Githogoro Grounds in Nairobi, Health CS Aden Duale reaffirmed the government’s commitment to free, quality primary care under SHA.
“Even if we are left with 20 honest hospitals, that’s better than 2,000 corrupt ones," Duale stated.
Duale urged the public to remain vigilant and report any instances of malpractice, service denial, or fraudulent claims through the toll-free number *147#, assuring that every complaint would be acted upon promptly.
“We will act,” he said firmly.
The Health CS also praised the work of Community Health Promoters (CHPs), commending them for reaching over 80,000 households with essential services.
Duale urged Kenyans to take advantage of the SHA Lipa Pole Pole to ease access.
The Senate has moved to hold SHA to account over delayed payments amounting to billions of shillings owed to county health facilities, delays that are now threatening to paralyse healthcare services across the country.
The Senate Public Investments and Special Funds Committee has resolved to summon the SHA Chief Executive Officer, Mercy Mwangangi, to explain the authority’s failure to settle the arrears inherited from the now-defunct National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).
The committee wants a clear breakdown of the outstanding balances, a payment schedule, and the current status of remittances to all 47 counties.
“This committee will invite the SHA CEO to provide a status report, payment schedule and balances to all county hospitals,” said committee vice chairperson Eddy Oketch.
